raised so far: $942 In May of 2005, I attended my first Shear Hope Event.
My friend, Jade, had made the commitment to shave her head and raise money to
support cancer patients. Watching Jade that evening, I knew God was calling me
to serve in the same way. Unfortunately, at the time, my hair was not long enough
to donate. So, after spending the past three years growing out my hair and seeing
several of my friends shave their heads, my turn has finally arrived! Many
people question why I have decided to shave my head. They mention other ways I
can help those in need without having to sacrifice my hair, such as volunteering
at the hospital or simply cutting my hair for Locks of Love. All of those other
options are great. However, the main lesson God has taught me through this journey
is that it is not about me. Yes, people may laugh and stare at me when I have
no hair. The truth is that my hair will grow back, but children with alopecia
(a condition that causes hair loss) or cancer may not have hair ever again. The
joy that a hairpiece will bring to a young girl is something that hair on my head
could never replace. By shaving my head I can be a giver of hope to those
suffering with cancer and alopecia, ultimately blessing people's lives.
